The pregnancy rate at the school was 4 times greater this year than last.

By May of this year, Gloucester High nurse Kim Daly reports she had given much more than 150 pregnancy tests, and when girls who tested negative “seemed disappointed,” Daly began to suspect they had been attempting to obtain pregnant on purpose.

The town has been hit hard in the course of the past few years with economic woes, and authorities say the girls feel like they’ve no future.

Kathleen Kingsbury, the Times reporter who wrote a story on the Gloucester girls, appeared on the “Today Show” with Meredith Vieira.
